Emergency Management Volunteer Scholarships
Round 3 of the Emergency Management Volunteer Scholarship opens with Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR) on 2 April 2018.
DFES volunteers have been very successful to date in obtaining scholarships with the number of scholarships granted to volunteers from DFES services ahead of all but one state for Rounds 1 and 2.
Much of the process will remain the same for Round 3 with the following notes and changes:
- AIDR have revised their website and therefore the links previously used will no longer work.
- Successful recipients must complete all studies identified in their scholarship agreement by 1 August 2019, inclusive. The recipient must incur the relevant expenses and claim reimbursement before COB 31 August 2019. Without exception, invoices received by AIDR after COB 31 August 2019 will not be reimbursed.
- The indigenous targets for scholarships have not been met. AIDR are willing to consider creative opportunities to include indigenous personnel. In real terms this means 9 or more indigenous volunteers Australia wide receiving scholarships. There are still requirements to be met, especially that the training must be Nationally Accredited and the training must not be part of normal training provided to the volunteer for their volunteering role i.e. not on a Volunteer Pathway. What can be considered are short courses, group attendance managed by the group members or a coordinator within the group (not a DFES responsibility) and Volunteer groups working with traditional land management techniques that may not be current volunteers.
- Emergency Management Volunteer Scholarship – DFES Officer Guide has been updated. It includes what to do for potential Indigenous Scholarship Opportunities.
Volunteer information, steps, dates and the DFES Officer Guide are available at https://extranet.dfes.wa.gov.au/sites/volunteers/members/Pages/emvs.aspx.

Mundaring Toy Library Open Day - 8th April
Our newest member, Bruce, has invited the brigade to attend the Open Day of the Mundaring Toy Library. The open day will be held on Sunday the 8th of April, from 10:00 until 14:00. This could be a great opportunity for recruiting and community engagement. The Austin should be going, and we may take another appliance along as well. If you are interested in attending, please contact Adrian.
Annual Street Appeal - 18th May
The Annual Volunteer Bushfire Brigade Street Appeal is on Friday the 18th of May. This has been a fantastic fund-raising activity for the brigade, and a great way of meeting volunteers from other brigades across the Bush Fire Service. Please indicate your interest in attending by emailing Michelle, or fill out the sign-up sheet in the station. The appeal will run from 07:00 until 18:00, and is centred around the Hay Street and Murray Street Malls.
