Christmas Availability
Christmas presents a particularly difficult time for Bush Fire Brigades, with many people taking the opportunity to visit friends and family, or even flee the country for cooler climes. Others find themselves blissfully free from their regular work duties. With this in mind, it is important that your availability is communicated to the Brigade Captain. Please consider your movements and availability over the coming weeks and update as required.
Current predictions indicate that Christmas Day will be warmer than average, with the preceding days few days being exceptionally hot (39 on Saturday). This presents an increased likelihood of bushfire. As predictions firm closer to Christmas, you may be contacted personally to indicate your availability.
It is also important to consider fatigue and alcohol management over this period; please take this into consideration when indicating your availability.
Caution when Re-Filling Appliances
The Brigade Equipment Officer has recently discovered that the filter screen on the 1.4 filler inlet is missing. With this not in place, gravel and other detritus can enter the tank, potentially clogging the pump or branches.
Crews are requested to show particular care when re-filling both appliances with water; ensure the water source is thoroughly flushed before connecting to the filler point. Also be aware of the possibility of gravel being pumped through to the branches; if your branch is not performing adequately, remove it from the hose (shut-off the water first!) and inspect the back of the branch. Each branch is fitted with a course mesh filter which will collect larger stones and debris, and can be easily cleared with the hose removed.
A long-term solution to this issue will be sought following the Christmas break.
