Bushfire, Horton Rd, 7th Sept

Called to assist Chidlow at a pair of fires near Horton Rd along Great Southern Highway. The fire was initially knocked down by the Captain from Inkpen, using a farm unit. Blacked out the area and contained with rake-hoe breaks.

Attended by Adrian, Dave R., Dave S., John R., and Michelle.

Last night's fire served as an early reminder to that we should be getting ready for the coming fire season. Now is a good time to check your own preparations. Some suggestions include:

  • Helmet torch - new batteries;
  • Pocket pen - check if dry and replace;
  • PPE under-clothes (shorts, shirt, socks, and jocks) - easily accessible;
  • BART availability;
  • Noting daily Fire Danger Rating.

In 1982 the Austin was overhauled and refitted with a new tank, hose reels and pump. She remained in service at Sawyers Valley until 1984, then loaned to the North Mt Helena Brigade until finally retiring from service in 1989.

In 2008, after nearly 20 years of being ‘stored’ behind a shed, the Austin was returned to the Sawyers Valley Brigade. Charles Heinrich the Brigade President, approached Westrac and the Austin restoration project commenced, courtesy of the Westrac apprentice group.

In 2014, in time for the opening of the Ashstead Street Fire Station, the Austin was handed back to the Brigade fully restored and in 2017 she was once again licensed as a fire tender.
