During the recent Bridgetown fire a timber treatment plant was severely impacted. The plant housed 600T of timber treated with copper chromium arsenate (CCA). Inhalation of CCA smoke and contact with ash can result in arsenic poisoning.

This incident highlights the importance of wearing suitable respirators whenever you are involved in fire fighting activities, including active fire fighting and mopping up. The presence of contaminated fuel, including CCA treated timber and asbestos, may not always be readily identified and all smoke should be treated as potentially toxic.

Members are offered both half-face respirators (3M 6000 Series)) and full-face respirators (Scott Promask, 3M FX FF-400, or 3M Full Face 6000 series). Spares are available on station, and a carried in both appliances. Members may also consider carrying a disposable N95 masks (3M Aura N95) as a last resort option.

If you discover any hazardous or unknown substances burning during an incident (or even a control burn) you should immediately inform your Team Leader and/or the Incident Management Team (Sector Commander, Operations Officer, Incident Controller, etc).

On Monday the 7th of February the Premier announced that WA would be adopting the “High Case Load Settings” for COVID-19 precautions. These settings change the definition of “close contacts” as well as reduce the minimum period of isolation required following an exposure. Whilst this lessens the risk of the Brigade being severely impacted by a potential exposure, additional precautions will remain in place in and around the station.

  • Masks must be worn at all times whilst inside the station or the appliances.
  • Where possible training and briefings will be conducted outdoors.
  • Meetings shall be held online.
  • All attendance at the station must be recorded in the station log. Visitors must check-in using the SafeWA or ServiceWA app.

With most Brigade members now triple vaccinated the risk from infection or illness is reduced. However the implications for the station being listed as an exposure site or a large percentage of the membership being required to isolate for a minimum of seven days are significant.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Adrian.
