Training This Week
There will be a slight change to training this week - rather than conducting a training session or briefing via Zoom, a fitness workout has been suggested! The workout selected is a Low Impact Cardio Workout, suitable for beginners and can be undertaken at home without specialised equipment.
Alternatively, those of us seeking more of a challenge can try a 30 Minute HIIT Workout with Weights.
Not only is physical fitness important for fire ground operations and safety, but it is also great for maintaining your physical and mental health.
Guide to Burning Grass Trees
DFES have produced a new information sheet that details how to manage the bushfire hazard and wildlife habitat values of grass trees in a safe and ecologically sustainable manner.
Grass trees are abundant in many areas of Western Australia, and their skirts are highly flammable. Their management is therefore an important consideration in reducing the bushfire hazard. This management however, either through trimming or burning, should consider the impacts on the grass trees themselves and the important habitat and resources they provide to a wide range of native birds, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates.
Several considerations are outlined including: • Igniting grass trees should always be done from the top down, on the downwind side, using a single ignition point. • Burning grass tree skirts too frequently, or too intensely, can result in negative impacts on native fauna and ecosystems.
The guide is available from the DFES Website, and has been attached to this newsletter.
