Importance of PPE at Bushfires
During a recent hazard reduction burn it was found that the burn area contained illegally dumped asbestos. Whilst generally hazardous, it is more so once exposed to fire or crushed by being driven over.
The presence of hazardous materials is a pervasive risk in bushland throughout our fire district. Hazards may include asbestos, tires, car bodies, waste oil, batteries, CCA timber, plastics, and other discarded waste. All bushfires should be approached as if they contain hazardous materials.
Please ensure that all members attending a bushfire are wearing appropriate PPE, in the form of half or full face breathing masks.
Skills Refresher Progress
The deadline for completing this year's Annual Skills Refresher prior to the start of the fire season is rapidly approaching. There is now only three and a half weeks until the 1st of November.
Many of our members have completed their refresher already, although a number are yet to start. If you have not yet completed your refresher please contact Training@SawyersValley.bfb.asn.au, LT1@SawyersValley.bfb.asn.au, or Captain@SawyersValley.bfb.asn.au to arrange a suitable time.
Members are reminded that completion of the annual skills refresher is a Shire mandated requirement for all members attending fire incidents. Failure to complete the refresher will preclude you from being able to attend any fires, including mop-up.
