End of Shift and Make-up

This training sessions covers the tasks required for a crew finishing a fire ground shift and making up. This includes making-up the appliances and the own PPE, as well as any required paperwork.

  • Receive confirmation of stand-down from immediate commander; Sector Commander or Incident Controller
  • Return to Forward Control Point
  • Notify Operations Officer that standing down
  • Inform if replacement crew is organised
  • Enquire if further crews required and notify Captain or First Lieutenant
  • Lodge any paperwork with Logistics Officer (personal diary, maps)
  • Inform ComCen that departing
  • Refill water
  • Refill fuels
  • Inform ComCen that back on station
  • Inform Captain or First Lieutenant that back on station
  • Debrief crew
    • Injuries, hazards, near-misses
    • Operational questions
    • Areas for improvement
  • Ensure all equipment correctly stowed, including:
    • Hoses
    • Stand-pipe and key
    • Couplings and Branches
    • Hand tools
    • Turn off work lights and stow
    • Reset radios to correct channels

      • Auxiliary Radio 238
      • Hand-helds 354
    • Refill water
    • Refill diesel
    • Refill petrol (pump and jerry-can)
    • Refill/replace Silvex
    • Clean out rubbish from cab
    • Clean windows and lights
    • Sweep out cab

The appliances must be made up at the end of a shift, and be completely ready for another incident. It may be possible to request another crew or station crew assist; the Captain or First Lieutenant can arrange this. The Crew Leader is responsible for ensuring that the appliances are made up. Fatigue or other commitments are not an excuse - if you are unable to make up the appliance you must inform the Captain or First Lieutenant who will organise for it to be done.

  • Shake out jacket and pants
  • Hang jacket and pants to dry if required
  • Knock out boots
  • Check torch batteries
  • Empty rubbish from pockets
  • Replace consumables (pens, note-pad, etc)
  • Complete Vehicle Log
  • Record Incident Number and times in Station Log
  • Complete Incident Report form
