New Fire Danger Rating System
A new Fire Danger Rating system is to be introduced from the 1st of September 2022. The new system both simplifies and unifies the various FDR schemes across Australia. The number of ratings will be reduced to four:
- Moderate
- High
- Extreme
- Catastrophic
A further level of “Off” will also be used to indicate that no proactive action is required by the community, during periods of little or no risk from bushfire.
In addition to the changes to the Fire Danger Rating levels, ratings for additional fuel types and new fire districts will be introduced. More information on these will be provided as the system is rolled out.
An introduction to the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System is attached.

Mundaring Fire School
The latest training calendar from the Mundaring Fire School is attached.
It has been noted that DFES have recently seen a few courses cancelled due to instructor availability, due to COVID-19 and secondment of career fire fighters across as ambulance drivers for St John Ambulance. Notice of any cancelled courses will be communicated to the participants as soon as possible.
Administration
AGM Update
Monday’s meeting was well attended, with 19 members in present in person, three on Zoom, and invited guests Jessica Shaw MLA, Ian Zlatnik and Dan Heptinstall. Ian Zlatnik was appointed as Returning Officer and conducted the election of office bearers.
For those who were unable to attend, all nominees were appointed to their respective positions – most are repeat offenders, aside from new CoM appointee Denise, and Dave Wh replacing Elton as 1st Lieutenant.
The award recipients were also announced -
- Les Ryan Trophy for Best New Member – awarded to Denise and Shane
- Keith Woodley Trophy for Outstanding Services – awarded to Lorna and Shane
- Equipment Manager’s Award – awarded to John R
Ian Zlatnik and Dan Heptinstall presented Keith with his 40 Year National Service Clasp, and Warren (in absentia) his National Medal. Congratulations to all elected members, award and medal recipients – well done.
As with any event there is always a ‘cast of thousands’ to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible:
- Jen for the catering – awesome;
- Lorna for her famous sponge cake;
- Denise and Shane for sprucing up the station, setting up and packing away;
- the Lorantas’s for sorting the refreshments;
- Warren and Adrian for sorting Zoom;
- Rob and co for packing up, washing up and putting everything back to normal.
A very big thank you to all you assisted.
